1. Find the ticket machine and press the button for the type of banking service you want
2. Look at your ticket and find that 150 people are ahead of you.
3. Glance at all the available counters and find that only one clerk is working.
4. Sit down, twiddle your thumbs, and have a few cigarettes.
5. After about an hour, your number will finally come up and a sense of achievement will overcome you.
6. After talking with the clerk, you found out the transaction you want to complete is only available on Mondays and Friday from 8 AM to 9 AM both days.
7. Leave the bank with your head down while cursing to yourself.

Two Chinese Companies I Trust

I've made two recent purchases that I'm extremely satisfied with. It's not every day that I go with a Chinese company and end up with no regrets.

1. Meizu music card MP3 Player
It was 650 RMB, which is roughly 1/3 of the price of a iPod Nano. They share a lot of the same features. Who know? Perhaps they copied it. It comes with 4Gs of storage, sliding-touch navigation (or whatever the technical term is), a radio tuner, and it even plays videos. The battery life is decent (~20 hours). The primary reason I bought it was because you can sort your songs by album and artist. Other cheap-ass MP3 players just list all of the songs together, which makes it an huge pain-in-the-ass to find the song you want.

The one, little negative about this player is that you can't fast-forward and rewind while watching videos. However, what made up for this was their customer service. I found an email address for customer service on their website (http://www.meizu.com/) and wrote to them. To my amazement, I received a reply early the next day. They say that this feature will be available when they make a software upgrade.

Even if this thing breaks after a year, I'll feel that I got my money's worth.

2. Ctrip
We recently bought a travel package to Bali through Ctrip. A few weeks after paying for it, I received a call from a rep. He called to tell me that the plane ticket prices had just been finalized by the airline, and that they would be refunding me 200 RMB. I had to ask again because I thought I heard it wrong.

Let's just say that if I owned a travel company, I wouldn't give a refund to my clients. They have no idea how much the plane tickets cost, so it wouldn't hurt just to keep the "extra" money.

I've been using their services for roughly two years now. Everything has been great with them. Competent staff. They actually call you back if you leave messages. And they actually give you exactly what you buy. I know that last sentence sounds funny. But hey, this is China.

--The article is mostly about spitting and public behavior, but I had a good laugh about the parts on English signs. I wonder if I'll still be laughing at the Chinglish when I'm 80. "Some translations are trickier, like describing pullet, which is a hen less than a year old but appears on some menus as Sexually Inexperienced Chicken. Mr. Tool said one prominent sign had become a regular photo op for foreigners: the Dongda Anus Hospital. Mr. Tool intervened. It is now the Dongda Proctology Hospital."

-The war on dogs continues in China - this time in Chongqing. I am so glad I have a cat. If this same thing happened in Shanghai and I had a dog, I would definitely consider fleeing to another city.

-A train ride from Shanghai to Chongqing currently takes 42 hours, but this will be cut down to a mere 8 hours. This will be in 5 years time, however, it's still damn impressive.

-Rich people in China are some of the worst.

-More cabbies trying to rip-off foreigners in Shanghai. The foreigner paid an average of 38 RMB per km, but luckily, the policy nabbed the bastard.

Digitizing Photos

Prior to the beginning of 2003, I only had a film camera. During my first year or so in China, I took several amazing trips and captured some unbelievable sights.

Until recently, I had no idea that photo stores, such as Kodak, could scan your negatives and thus digitize your photos! I brought in all my negatives (39 rolls) and in about a week, all were burned onto one DVD. Amazing! Better yet, this only cost me 500 RMB, which breaks down to around 12.8 RMB per roll. (I'm really hoping this was a good price.)

Next project - sorting out all these photos and putting up some web albums! (I thoroughly enjoy time-wasting projects.)

Traffic Laws in the P.R.C

I've never read the actual traffic laws of the People's Republic of China, but here's my version of it:

Section I: Parking
Article 1: You may park your vehicle anywhere you'd like, including the sidewalk, unless a police officer wishes to park in your spot.
Article 2: If a police officer tries to give you a parking ticket, you may cuss at him.
Article 3: When parking on a street, you may park your vehicle 5 feet away from the curb, at most. It doesn't matter if your vehicle has blocked a portion of the driving lane.

Section II: Right of Way
Article 1: The right of way belongs to the vehicle that is the largest, or has the loudest horn. The only exceptions are police cars, who always have the right of way.
Article 2: The simple order is as follows: Bulldozers, Dump Trucks, Public Buses, Ivecos, Cars, Ambulances, Motorcycles, Mopeds, Electric Bicycles, Bicycles, Pedestrians, QQs, Babies in a carriage.

Section III: Traffic Lights
Article 1: Red means stop, except for the first five seconds after a light turns red, during which you may still run through the light.
Article 2: Red also means go, if you want it to.
Article 3: Instead of waiting patiently for a left turn light, you may be an asshole and cut in line. Hell. Everyone cuts in line at McDonald's, so therefore, we'd like to keep the rules uniform.

Section IV: Bribes
Article 1: If you get pulled over by a policeman, please refer to the schedule posted on http://bribes.jiaotong.com.cn for the appropriate amounts to pay. Payments are accepted on all currencies, except for Japanese Yen. Please don't forget to ask for a fapiao.

Section V: Highways
Article 1: Four lane highways actually mean six. The shoulders on both sides of the road may be used at all times. Please be aware of donkey carts in the shoulder though.
Article 2: You may disregard the signs posted for Speed Limits and also those designating certain types of vehicles for occupancy of each lane. (These are for appearance purposes only, so we don't look too bad in the international media.)

Section VI: Rush Hour
Article 1: Please simply follow the vehicle in front of you as closely as possible. It is highly advised to block the box. Please have total disregard for others, cause they can just wait for the next green light.
Article 2: Pedestrians can cross the road at any time. Please try to avoid getting hit by a car though. We don't want to have to doctor our statistics for traffic-related fatalities, more than we already do.
Article 3: When stuck in a traffic jam, please honk your horn as obnoxiously as possible. Your honking efforts WILL get the traffic moving.

Section VII: Sidewalks and Bicycle Lanes
Article 1: As long as your car fits, you may drive on sidewalks and in bicycle lanes. (Sidewalks and bicycle lanes are just for those too poor to own a car.) To be thoughtful though, please honk your horn continuously so cyclists and pedestrians know you are coming. If you hit somebody, it's okay, since you have the right of way. The pedestrian or bicyclist will have to pay for the damages to your car.

Section VIII: Driving
Article 1: You are not required to stay in your own lane. The dotted lines are there for appearance purposes only.
Article 2: When changing lanes, you do not need to use a blinker. (We don't even know what they are for anyways) Instead, simply guide your vehicle into the next lane. If you hear somebody honking, quickly steer your vehicle back into your original lane. If you don't hear any honking, then you've just successfully completed a lane change.
Article 3: It is highly advised to honk your horn at all times while in a vehicle. We want to make everyones driving experience "re nao". The louder the better.
Article 4: If you are looking for a street number, etc. while on an unfamiliar road, you may stop your car in the middle of road at any time. Passengers in vehicles behind you will be patient, since we all live in a harmonious society. It is not advisable to pull over in order to keep traffic moving, since that doesn't makes any sense whatsoever.
Article 5: You may use your cell phone to send SMS messages while driving, since it's not all that important to keep your eyes on the road.

Section IX: Traffic Accidents
Article 1: If you are a pedestrian and in the vicinity of a traffic accident, you are advised to call your friends, instead of the police, on your mobile phone. Then you should crowd around the scene of the traffic accident, and begin to discuss which party was at fault.
Article 2: Ambulances are guaranteed to arrive at the scene within 48 hours.

How To Ride An Elevator In China

I thought common sense was a universal thing, but clearly it's not...

1. Push the button for either up or down and then move quickly towards the elevator door.
2. Stand directly in front of the elevator door, and wait until it stops on your floor.
3. The instant the door opens, walk directly into the crowd of people who are trying to get out.
4. Say something like "ai yo!" as one of the exiting people bumps into you.
5. Wonder for a while about why that person ran into you.
6. Despite others who are riding the same elevator with you, hold the door open for your friend, who is about 100 meters away.
7. Talk as loudly as you can, even though it's a small, enclosed space.

This may be a bit of an exaggeration, since I've never personally experienced all of these together in one elevator ride. However, for those of you who have been to China, you know what I'm talking about...

Flashback to 2003

THE ROUTINE

Taught at Aston 2 (left and right), where all the cool teachers were. When it was warm out, we'd go out for some chuarn and shao bing during our lunch break (bottom). Otherwise, it'd be hong shao qie zi (红烧茄子) and hong shao rou (红烧肉) for lunch every weekend.

I'll never forgot those damn annoying kiddie songs that would wake me up at 7 AM when school was in session (left). Same music every day. Do not live next to a school in China.
When trying to be more health conscious, we would hit the weights at the Black Horse gym (right).

Coffee Club Express right down the street from our apartment (left). Spent many afternoons there studying Chinese. Coffee for 12 kuai and excellent tuna fish sandwiches. Sometimes, we would cruise around on our sweet rides (right).

Most Wednesday nights were still spent at Weiwei's (top left). Other nights were spent at the bowling alley (top right), Lan Gui Fang (middle left), the Pyramid (middle right), at a KTV (bottom left), drinking zhapi (draft beer) somewhere in the city (bottom right), or a combination of the above.

A common after-class activity was drinking and playing cards outside of Aston 1 (bottom).

Many group dinners (left). Half of our days were probably spent eating, or at least thinking about where and what to eat. Found a lot of weird stuff, including something that was later termed Whale Anus (right). Will never forget about that All-you-can-eat off the menu Japanese restaurant for 88 kuai.

Plenty of nights were also spent playing Beruit (below). At least we got some use out of the ping pong table.

TIMELINE

2003 started off a little hazy, having spent the end of the previous night puking outside of O'Malleys and then polishing off a plate of nachos at Badlands. Finally went to Qianfoshan (Thousand Buddha Mountain). Then came along one of the best days in Jinan. Live fish in the afternoon (left) followed by 6 hamburgers and a small coke each at McDonald's (right).

Spent Spring Festival in Hefei. Then off to Beijing and Harbin (below). Harbin: -30 to -40 Celcius.

Dog hot pot again with a much larger crowd. You don't want to know (left). Later on, went to KTV and Rick kicked some guy down the stairs for knocking over his kid. Chinese vs. Foreigners brawl almost erupted. A few teachers were hit with sticks. Mustache contest going on at the time. Patch missing on Chris's 'stache. Ha.

Had a week off between semesters. Hainan (left). Lizard on a stick. Free upgrade to the suite. Didn't win a hand for about an hour and a half while playing HK Poker. Sad. Welcome dinner for new teachers (right). Two kegs that night and lots of mushrooms soaked in wasabi.

Moved to a new apartment in Foshanyuan with Christopher (below).

Chengde trip to see some temples and then a stopover in Tianjin on the way back. Snuck into the soft sleepers, got caught, and then bribed them to let us stay.

Inner Mongolia trip during SARS (below). Someone reported that Christopher was coughing on the train. Temperatures checked after getting off. Doctors advised we be taken to the hospital. David arrived on a different train. Refused to pay for a taxi for David to follow us to the hospital. David hopped in the ambulance and got quarantined with us. Testing was done. Doctors said there was something wrong with one of us. Uh oh. Later said there was no problem. Finally off to catch the stream train. Hired a taxi and drove for a few hours. Hole in the road. Thought we were gonna flip. Saw the train pulling out as we got to the station.

May Day trip to Shanghai. Train was wicked empty since it was during SARS. Jesse and Alice's wedding outside of Dezhou (right). Very talented guy in the band who could play an instrument while smoking 4 cigs from his nose (left).

June trip home after 17 straight months in China. Taco Bell (left)! Went to see Weiwei's newborn: Mi Le (right).

Flashback to 2002

THE ROUTINE

Arrived in China and spent New Year's in Shanghai with Jason, Scott and his friend from Japan (left). Arrived in Jinan, the "City of Springs" (right), later to become a place I would call my second home.

Afternoons and weekends were spent at Aston 1 (left), teaching whacky adults and kids (right).

Many evenings/early mornings were spent at the Fang (below). Kabab sandwiches with Tabasco. Qingdao beer for 10 kuai. Puking in my favorite sink. Endless drinking and fun.

Tuesday night was Jiaozi (Dumpling) night (below). Yu Xiang Rou Si dumplings. Chuarn dumplings. Alice's Di San Xian Dumplings. Sometimes, even a little snake baijiu to wash down the beer, or was it the other way around.

Wednesdays was always Weiwei's night (left). Everyone's gotta try a testi or two (right). Probably spent more hours drinking here than teaching every week. F---s you! Hwangscabo!

Days off were spent at the gym (left), and exploring the city looking for weird stuff to eat. Rabbit head (right).

TIMELINE

Spring Festival trip to Qingdao (below), Huangdao, Weihai, Penglai and Yantai. Froze our asses off on the way there in the van. Two cases of Baotuquan Beer helped warm us up a little though, from having to move around holding in our pee. Visited the infamous alley in Huangdao. Bill fell into mud/quicksand and then tied bags around his shoes. Had beers on the beach on a nice, sunny winter day. Many roast beef sandwiches at the French bar. Oh, and the fireworks! 1,000 kuai can buy a whole lot of bang.

Dog Hot Pot with Brad and Jason. Tasty stuff. First go at the100/10 Challenge. Ended up attempting (and succeeding) all by myself for some reason. Climbed Taishan the night after (left). Pitch black with crappy flashlights. Wicked windy and freezing at the top. Saw the sunrise though! Trip to Weifang for the International Kite Festival (right). Missed it by one day.

May Day holiday. First trip with Christopher. Shanghai, Wuyishan (right) and Xiamen (bottom). Hard seated it for two night in a row (left). Kicked his ass in Hong Kong Poker because he was "sick". Came back with a nice tan.

Donkey. Had the branch (it wasn't a twig) and berries (below).

Summer came along. Simply amazing. World Cup 2002. Many nights spent at Weiwei's (left). The whole country basically stopped to watch football. Attempted 100/10 Challenge again. Christopher made comments about somebody's nipples. Dog Hot Pot again with Brad, Rishi and Angie. Discussing guns over a meal of dog hot pot and paw. Rishi liked it as you can see (right).

4 months off. Had about 30,000 kuai in the bank and many places to go. Went to Jiuhua Shan and Huangshan (the Yellow Mountains) (below). Latter among the most beautiful in the world.

Trip out west with Christopher and Kelly to Xian. We spent like 5 days there, but can't remember what we did. Best Shaobing in China there. Then off to Xiahe (left) and Qinghai (right and below)...

And finally Xinjiang. Hopped off the train at Hami to pick up some Hami melons (left). Made it to Kashgar (right). Real kababs. Shou Zhua Fan (their rice you can eat with your hands). Nang (Xinjiang bread). Delicious.

Rented a Santana with driver and traveled along the Karakoram Highway (road to Pakistan) (left and right).

Got back to Kashgar. Down to Hotan. Took a wicked nice bus across the Taklamakan Desert to Urumqi. Had a 48 hour train ride back to Jinan. Don't remember what we did the whole ride, but I'm sure there was lots of HK Poker being played.

Rested up in Jinan and then hit the road once again. Trip to Shanghai (left), Putuoshan (right), Shaoxing, Hangzhou (bottom).

Went back to Jinan to relax for a while, then off again. Trip to Shanxi and Sichuan by myself. First stop. Datong. Yungang Buddhist Grottoes (left) and the Hanging Monestary (right). Then Pingyao (bottom).

From there, straight to Sichuan. Was feeling lonely so I joined a Chinese tour group. Meet a cool Taiwanese kid to hang with. Jiuzhaigou (left). Scenery along the road (right).

Joined another Chinese tour group with the Taiwanese friend and went to Emei Shan (left) and the Leshan Big Buddha (right). Back to Chengdu. Hot pot (bottom). Holy crap was it spicy.

Went back to Jinan by train straight from Chengdu. Only a 36 hour ride. Rested and then off again by myself. Trip to Hong Kong (left), Macau (right), Hainan (bottom), Guangzhou.

Got back in time for the Aston Christmas Party at that bar I can't remember the name of now. Christmas Day in the apartments (below).

New Year's trip to Shanghai. Stopped in Zhouzhuang (left) and Yixing first. Then off to Shanghai to join the rest of the crew. Each put in 200 kuai into a pool for spending for the night. Somehow had money left over the next morning! Amazing considering the 60 kuai Guiness's at O'Malleys (right).

Cats in my apartment complex

Here are the five cats in my apartment complex that I like to feed every night. Starting with the closest one and moving clockwise, their names are: Shiny (aka Little Bastard), Fat Head Chunks, Fred, Corduroy and Worried.

Here's a closer shot of Worried.

Fred and Corduroy. They look to be the same age and play well together.

Fat Head Chunks. While he's eating, you can walk with the bowl of food and his head won't even leave the bowl.
